Welcome to FMCSA’s Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) for CDL Class B. This is where your exciting journey as a commercial vehicle driver begins. In this module, you’ll learn the essential skills for safely operating commercial vehicles, from getting to know your vehicle to mastering control systems, inspections, and important maneuvers like parking and coupling.
Here is what is covered in the course in a Nutshell
1. Orientation:
- This section of the ELDT (Entry-Level Driver Training) covers the initial orientation that a commercial vehicle driver should undergo. It includes an introduction to the industry, safety regulations, and the expectations of a commercial driver.
2. Control Systems/Dashboard:
- In this part, drivers are trained on the various control systems and dashboard components of a commercial vehicle. This includes understanding the instrument panel, gauges, and warning lights, and how to operate them effectively.
3. Pre- and Post-Trip Inspections:
- Pre- and post-trip inspections are crucial for ensuring the safety and roadworthiness of the vehicle. Drivers are taught how to perform these inspections thoroughly, checking for any defects or issues that need immediate attention.
4. Basic Control:
- Basic control skills are essential for safely operating a commercial vehicle. This section covers topics like steering, braking, accelerating, and maintaining control of the vehicle in various driving conditions.
5. Shifting/Operating Transmissions:
- Commercial vehicles often have manual transmissions or automated manual transmissions. This part of the training focuses on teaching drivers how to shift gears, operate the transmission effectively, and maintain proper speed and control.
6. Backing and Docking:
- Backing and docking maneuvers can be challenging for commercial drivers. This section provides training on how to safely perform these maneuvers, including parallel parking, backing into loading docks, and more.
